Speakers and Schedule

Hello, Pressers!

WordCamp San Antonio gets closer every day, and we can’t wait for you to see what we have in store for you this year. But before the big day arrives, you should check out our schedule of speakers and workshops! That way, you can create an itinerary for the camp and make sure you don’t miss any of the talks you want to attend.

Speaking of our awesome speakers and workshops, you might notice something a little different if you attended in the past. This year, we’ve decided to revamp our old ‘three-track’ system of beginner-, advanced-, and business-centered talks.

Now when you look at the schedule, you’ll see tracks like podcasting, web development, writing, and business. We’re just trying to make it easier (or more difficult!) for you to figure out which talks you can get the most out of at WordCamp.

Check out the schedule below and see which talks you’ll be attending. See something you really like? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter. We can’t wait until September 30, y’all. It can’t come soon enough!

Ticket Announcement

WordCamp San Antonio is getting closer every day, so we wanted to take a moment to send out a very important reminder to everyone. If you’ve already purchased your tickets for this year’s event, then disregard this message. Or regard it and forward it to all your friends. Your choice!

In order to ensure that you get the lunch of your choice and the size shirt you want, please have your ticket order placed by September 1.

Since our shirts this year are going to be so out of this world amazing, our t-shirt vendor needs our order by then, and we want to make sure you get a shirt you can wear every single day, not just one you go to sleep or do the chores in. Oh, and if you do wear it every day, be sure to wash it in between wearing it. Your co-workers will thank you.

Also, when you’re purchasing your tickets, let us know if you have any special needs for your lunch.

Whether you’re vegetarian, allergic to nuts, or can’t eat any food that’s seen the light of day, we want to know about it. We want to be sure everyone has an awesome time at this year’s event.

We will order extras of everything just in case, but to be 100% sure that you’ll get the lunch and t-shirt size you want, please have your ticket orders placed by September 1.

Alright. Lecture’s over.

Press on!

What to Expect at This Year’s WordCamp San Antonio

  • 2017 marks the third year for WordCamp in San Antonio, and this year is sure to be the best one yet. We’ve got speakers, workshops, and an awesome after party planned for September 30 and October 1. And don’t forget about the swag. But let’s dive a little deeper and see what exactly you can look forward to at this year’s WordCamp San Antonio.

The Days

Yup. You read that right. DayS. WordCamp San Antonio has traditionally been a one-day affair. But this year, we’re trying something new. We’ll be holding our event over the course of two days, Saturday September 30, and Sunday, October 1. Two times the WordCamp, two times the swag, and two times the fun.

The Location

One of the biggest suggestions we got at last year’s WordCamp was to make 2017’s a little less… far. You spoke, and we listened. This year, we’ll be holding WordCamp San Antonio at the breathtaking UTSA Downtown Campus.

The Talks

WordCamp San Antonio is all about learning. Well, fun, parties, networking, and breakfast tacos, too, but mostly learning. We’ll have experts giving talks all weekend long, speaking about everything from advertising to XML. There’ll be something for everyone, no matter your skill level.

The Workshops

Instead of just having hour-long discussions or lectures, we’ll also be holding longer length, in-depth workshops. For these workshops, groups will break off and work with an expert to learn more about a specific topic. What will the workshops be on? Check our website in the upcoming months to find out!

The After Party

Like we mentioned previously, we’ll be holding WordCamp San Antonio at the beautiful UTSA Downtown Campus. On top of that (literally), you won’t even need a ride to the after party. We’ll be raising the roof on the 3rd floor terrace at the Downtown Campus. There’ll be beautiful views of downtown SA, plenty of drinks, music, and food. Oh. Uh…and networking. I guess you could do some of that, too.

So what are you waiting for? Grab your tickets to WordCamp San Antonio today. We’ll see you September 30 and October 1!

Pressable becomes a CampMaster

We are happy to announce that Pressable has joined WordCamp San Antonio as a CampMaster sponsor! They have also added the “That Party Was In-Tents” After Party package in order to bring you the best roof-top terrace after party San Antonio Campers have ever seen. We want to thank them for their continued support!

Here’s a message from the Pressable Team:

Pressable is a proud supporter of WordCamps and the San Antonio WordPress community. WordCamp San Antonio is one of the best and most vibrant WordPress events in the US and we’re thrilled to be returning in 2017.

Look for us at the Pressable booth. While you’re there, pick up some custom San Antonio swag and ask a question for one of our WordPress experts. In the meantime, check out our WordPress Meetup events, happening locally every month.

Call for Volunteers

WordCamp is all about community. From speakers to greeters, sponsors to attendees, none of it would be possible without you. That’s why we need your help to make WordCamp San Antonio 2017 the best WordCamp yet. Fill out the fields below to volunteer and help us make this year’s event a success.

Call for Speakers

Speaker deadline has past. We are currently reviewing the applicants and will be announcing final choices soon. Thanks!

Please consider applying next year

Did you miss the application window? Please consider us for next year. We appreciate you offering to share your WordPress knowledge with the WordPress community. Here are some things to keep in mind when preparing:

  • Yes, you can! Whether you’re a user, designer, or developer, WordCamp is an event where you can share what you’ve learned about WordPress and how you’re working with it.
  • Local first. WordCamps are local-focused events that are asked to shoot for an 80% local / 20% visiting speakers ratio. You might get picked as one of the few out-of-town speakers on a WordCamp schedule, but the chances are smaller the farther you get from home, unless you’re the definitive expert on your proposed topic.
  • Volunteers only. WordCamps are 100% organized and staffed by volunteers, and WordCamps don’t pay speakers or cover speaker travel/accommodations.
  • Share > pitch. WordCamps are educational events, not marketing opportunities, so proposing a product pitch will not get you very far with the speaker selection team.
  • No “pay for play.” WordCamps never, ever provide a speaking opportunity in exchange for sponsorship or anything else. Please don’t ask.
  • Make it unique. WordCamp sessions are all recorded and posted to WordPress.tv for everyone to watch, so it’s redundant to have speakers give the same talk at multiple events. WordCamps pride themselves on having unique content.
  • Tell a story. The web is full of tutorials, and most people won’t remember most of the instructions from your instructional talk in a few days (or hours!). The human brain is hard-wired to be engaged by stories, and WordCamp organizers are looking for sessions that will inspire attendees to do more with WordPress.

Why support WordCamp San Antonio 2017?

WordCamps are run entirely by volunteers, and the only funds available are those from ticket sales and our community supporters. We strive to keep ticket prices low ($40 for a full weekend) to ensure accessibility to freelancers and small business owners with limited funds. However, that introduces a challenge when it comes to having a suitable venue, food for hundreds, technical capabilities, support services, and top-notch speakers. That’s where you come in.

Whether you have a venue to let us use for the meetup prior to the event, want to support lunch, can provide snacks and refreshments, can provide a service we are in need of, or have sponsor dollars not yet allocated, we can use and absolutely appreciate that help.

What’s In It For Me? (My Brand)

With all levels of support comes exposure for your brand to our attendees—last year’s WordCamp San Antonio had 350 attendees and, with addition of a full second day of events, we’re expecting many more attendees this year. The typical WordCamp attendee is between the ages of 25 and 45, makes $45,000–125,000 per year, and has a large following on social media channels like Twitter and Facebook. Bloggers make great brand ambassadors. Lucky for you they make up 90% of our attendee list! Make a great impression with our group, and they won’t be shy about painting you in a good light to their followers and friends. In addition to positive online press about your brand, you can also use your support as an opportunity to reach out in-person to your potential new customers or clients that are attending our event. World Series and Pennant Level Supporters are granted a table in the lobby area and are well-publicized throughout the event.

Supporter Requirements

Any event carrying the WordCamp name must follow some basic philosophical guidelines. WordCamps do not discriminate, and anyone is welcome to attend. WordPress is licensed under the General Public License v2, and without the GPL WordPress would not exist. People or companies in violation of the WordPress license cannot be accepted as event organizers or sponsors, as that would provide promotion to entities acting in opposition to the philosophy behind WordPress. Speakers need to be compliant with the license for the same reason — the exception to this rule would be if the non-compliant person is speaking as part of a discussion about the issues around GPL compliance.

Thank you from your team of volunteer organizers!
